did you know a stiff ankle could be affecting your knee or back pain?

Being able to test the 3-dimensional motion of each joint, and understand how they work together in a chain, is the foundation of the OMPT approach.

Did you know that chronic shoulder and elbow pain is often associated with issues in the neck?

Both mechanical and neurological connections between the spine and joint in the arms and legs can be an underlying cause of pain and dysfunction. Nothing works alone. If you have had persistent pain and/or impairments in a joint in your arm or leg, maybe you need an OMPT assessment of the link to your spine as well.

did you know that mti is an international hub for ompt training?

We don’t only excel in it, we teach it. MTI Physical Therapy serves as a clinical training site for undergraduate and postgraduate physical therapists seeking to advance their clinical skills and careers.

what exactly is orthopedic manual physical therapy (ompt)?

OMPT is a specialty within physical therapy for the management of muscle and joint conditions using highly specific, hands on, manual techniques and therapeutic exercises. Limitations in joint motion can lead to pain and wear and tear, as well as reduce muscle strength and performance. A proper assessment of joint function is the job of an OMPT. Your family doctor, personal trainer or orthopedist is not trained in this type of assessment, nor can you see these restrictions on an MRI or x-ray. It requires the special skills and experience of an OMPT-trained physical therapist.

Once these joint and/or soft tissue restrictions are identified, manual therapy techniques through massage and joint mobilization can reduce your pain, increase range of motion, and improve muscle coordination and strength, to improve your functional tolerance to exercise and daily living activities. If you are not tolerating exercise, and maybe did not have get the results you expected from previous traditional physical therapy, it may be because you require a more specific manual assessment and intervention to help you to move better. For a physical therapist to develop the manual skills for this type of work they spend years of advanced training and mentorship, which is exactly what MTI Physical Therapy was founded upon.

A manual therapy approach is more than just the hands-on techniques used. It is a thought process from assessment leading to a specific diagnosis and a deeper understanding of the mechanics in which you move.

  • If your mechanics are faulty they can be corrected through manual techniques and specific joint and muscle exercises.
  • If there is an acute tissue injury—such as a fracture, ligament strain, tendon/muscle strain— tissue healing can be accelerated through a Tissue Regeneration Therapy (TRT) approach.
  • But why wait until there is pain or an injury, the OMPT Annual Checkup can identify problems in your joints and muscles before they become painful and limit your function.

more than just a few courses

The postgraduate training in OMPT that MTI sponsors meets the national accreditation through ABPTRFE. Additionally, this program meets the only international standards of the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Physical Therapists. IFOMPT is a subgroup of World Physiotherapy, which is the sole international voice for physical therapy, representing more than 350,000 physical therapists worldwide. In turn, World Physiotherapy is a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
