Manipulation

Angela M.

"My Physical Therapist is knowledgeable, friendly, positive and genuinely cares about her patients. I like the massage / manipulation prior to exercising — I think it really helps to improve the overall results."

Why Do We Use Manipulation?

Manipulation is a great form of pain management and just one part of a manual therapy approach to healing. Do your arm or leg joints hurt? Is your back or neck causing you trouble? Has your pain become unbearable? If so, you may benefit from spinal or peripheral joint manipulation.

Manipulation helps relieve pressure on joints (by improving the joint mechanics), reduce inflammation (by decreasing irritation), and decrease  muscle tightness from protective guarding. It is a gentle, hands-on manual therapy technique that focuses on improving the joint mechanics and enhancing joint function.

As the body’s joints are interconnected, even pain that may seem unrelated to the area of concern could be effectively relieved through manipulative treatments as a small part of your whole plan of care.

In Washington State, physical therapists need an endorsement on their license to show that they qualify to safely perform this technique. Our Residency trained physical therapists have this endorsement. The advanced training MTI provides physical therapists, exceeds the requirements for this manipulation endorsement. In fact, MTI Physical Therapy, therapists have trained, and continue to train, many of the therapists in the region working to obtain their spinal manipulation endorsements.

We have learned our techniques from some of the world leaders in manual therapy and manipulation – Ola Grimsby (Norway/USA), Laurie Hartman (UK), Darryl Herbert (UK), Phillip Tehan (Australia), Peter Gibbons (Australia), Freddy Kaltenborn (Norway), Robbie Goodrum (UK), Robert Maigne (France), Brad Jordan (USA), Rick Hobusch (USA), Ivar Skjelbred (Switzerland) and James Dunning (UK/USA)

Physical therapy and manipulation

During a comprehensive examination, our physical therapists check your joint mechanics to check for areas that could be improved. It is wise to have your joints checked every year, in order to ensure that they are moving how they should. Maybe our Annual Checkup is just what you need to evaluate your joints before they become a problem.

At MTI Physical Therapy, our physical therapists are experts, in the field of joint health and can help your joints get back to their normal level of function.

Manipulation has had a very positive effect on many of our patients. Our physical therapists can help you restore more natural movement to your joints, improve your flexibility to increase joint fluid circulation, improve your muscle strength, and educate you on correct posture and prevention techniques. Essentially, we can help you do more with less pain.

So, what’s the importance of this form of treatment?

Your body is a complicated structure of vertebrae, discs, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Therefore, it requires a delicate balance to make sure it is at its peak level of health and function. This is why manipulation is such an important part of our manual therapy approach. If you are living with pain, you know how limiting it can be.
